Is the Vatican open on Sunday?
Sunday openings and the free Museums date

Avoid Wednesday and Sunday at free St Peter's if you want to miss its 2 busiest days. The Museums close on most Sundays, with the next free opening on 29 November. That Sunday ends at 14:00, so a paid weekday gives you more time.

The Museums and St Peter's have separate calendars; a busy day at the Basilica does not mean the Museums are closed.
Busy days
St Peter's is free to enter. Wednesday is busy because the Papal Audience usually takes place then. Sunday is busy around the Angelus at 12:00. Another day suits you if your main aim is time inside the Basilica.
The Museums cost €25 online or €20 at the door. They normally open Monday to Saturday. The last Sunday of the month usually has free entry, with the shorter hours of 9:00 to 14:00.
The Papal Audience has free tickets requested through the Prefecture of the Papal Household. It usually takes place on Wednesday unless the Pope has other commitments. Keep that day if attending the Audience is the reason for your visit.
What to do: Choose an open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday if you want both sites and can avoid St Peter's busiest days. Wednesday suits the Audience, and the last Sunday offers free Museums entry.
